Village Books & Music

The new Village Books & Music store by Friends of the Library of Hawai‘i opened to the public on Saturday, February 27, 2021. Thousands of books, CDs, DVDs, vinyl records, games, works of art, and much more are available for sale!

The store is conveniently located at the former Pier 1 Imports space at 1142 Auahi Street, Honolulu. Ample parking is available in the adjacent structure.  

Generously sponsored by Ward Village and Hawai‘i State Federal Credit Union, the store will be open until June 2021, giving book and music lovers three months to browse our collections. Inventory will be restocked daily and rotated periodically. Please check back often for new items.

Visit

If you know what time you want to come, make a reservation using the form below. If you just want to stop by when you have time, you can do that too!Due to pandemic restrictions, capacity at the store will be limited. To manage attendance, half of the capacity will be available for reservations and half will be for walk-up traffic. Additional walk-up patrons will be admitted as capacity permits. Reservation intervals will vary based on the day. Please use the form below to make a reservation. Patrons may reserve a maximum of one (1) reservation per day and three (3) per week.

Safety

All patrons must wear a face mask and a temperature check will be conducted upon entry.  No exceptions. Hand sanitizer will be available at the entry.

Volunteer

If you feel comfortable, please pick up a shift at the bookstore! Join us every now and then, or make it a regular gig. Mahalo! Sign up here

Our Move Updates

We have moved to our new permanent location in Iwilei (near Costco and Dole Cannery).

New Address: 501 Sumner Street, #614, Honolulu, 96817 (beginning Dec. 21st)

We are no longer operating out of the Halawa Warehouse. Please donʻt hesitate to contact us with any questions.

Book & Media Donations Paused:  We will not accept book donation drop-off between Dec. 17th and Jan. 19th. Schedule a donation using our appointment form.

The last day for the Manoa Public Library book donation drop-off was Dec. 17th. This pick up and drop off location will not resume as we have now moved into Honolulu.

Online Bookstore Order Pick-up:  Orders will be available at the Iwilei location ONLY beginning on Dec. 21st.

Capital Campaign:  Although we were able to secure a bridge loan to purchase the facility, we are continuing our capital campaign to fund the purchase. We have less than $1 Million to go. Please consider making a contribution.

COVID-19 Notices – Sep 24

We hope you are keeping healthy during these uncertain times. The global corona virus pandemic is creating a lot of disruption to social gatherings and normal business operations. This momentary pause is now extending to our public libraries and the Friends.

FLH WAREHOUSE NOTICE (in accordance with government orders)
  • The FLH BOOKS @ Marks bookstore is reopened as of Sep. 24
  • The FLH warehouse is reopen to volunteers Sep. 24
  • We are accepting donations Tuesday – Thursday by appointment
  • The 73rd Annual Booksale has been canceled.
  • Available now – FLH has books available for sale online!
As the situation continues to change, any of these policies may also change.
PUBLIC LIBRARY NOTICE (in accordance with government orders)
The new policies are in recognition that social distancing is at present the best way to prevent/combat the virus.. The library system administration is continuously re-evaluating and updating policies.
Until Further Notice –
  • All Hawai‘i Public Libraries are still Closed – but they do offer select services
    • Library Takeout Book Pickup & Drop Off
  • Check out their online resources! Click on the “Browse” or “Learn” tabs.
  • All public library Bookstores are closed.
  • Any scheduled Friends booksale or other events on library property have been postponed.
  • All public libraries have suspended acceptance of donated material.
  • All physical programs and events will be cancelled at all 51 locations.
    • Virtual Programs are happening now!
  • All external meetings scheduled in Library meeting rooms will be cancelled or rescheduled.
  • Bookmobile Services will be limited.
  • All email notifications are turned off right now. Notifications will resume once they reopen.
  • To reduce exposure, HSPLS is following best sanitation practices for workplaces.
  • Please visit the HSPLS website for more information.
Again, these measures are to promote the health and safety of all library users and to prevent gatherings. HSPLS is monitoring all State and federal information and guidance, and re-evaluating its services daily. We look forward to limited in-branch services soon!

Space

  • More than 75 volunteers give their time year-round to process 750,000+ donations and store 150+ pallets of books & media for our sales in our warehouse.
  • Our sales raise 50% of our revenues for Hawai‘iʻs 51 public libraries.
  • The 8,000 SF warehouse that we currently rent is bursting at the seams!
  • Industrial warehouse space in Honolulu is quickly disappearing and the time is now to secure a location for a stable future.

Welcome!

The Friends of the Library of Hawai‘i is a nonprofit organization whose primary objective is to maintain free public libraries in the State of Hawai‘i, to promote extension of library services throughout the State of Hawai‘i and to increase the facilities of the public library system of Hawai‘i by securing materials beyond the command of the ordinary library budget. Other objectives are to focus attention on libraries and to encourage and accept, by bequest or gift, donations of books, manuscripts, money, and other appropriate material that can enrich the cultural opportunities available to the people of Hawai‘i.
