Pahala Public and School Library (Big Island) will expand its public service hours effective Monday, September 30, the first substantial increase in nearly four years due to previous budget cuts.
The Library, located at 96-3150 Pikake Street on the campus of Ka`u High and Pahala Elementary Schools, will be moving from a Monday, Thursday, and Friday schedule of 15 hours per week to a Monday through Friday schedule of 34 hours per week.
"We would like to say mahalo nui loa to Governor Abercrombie for easing the hiring restrictions which allowed us to recruit and fill vacancies at our libraries," said State Librarian Richard Burns. "We would also like to thank our legislators, especially Senator Gilbert Kahele (D-1st) of Hilo, the Board of Education, and the unions for their support to help make these much needed additional hours possible."

Prominent Big Island Artist Donates Sculpture to Hilo Public Library
Well-known Big Island artist Henry Bianchini has donated a sculpture entitled "Involuntary Journey" to the Hilo Public Library. The aluminum and stainless sculpture, rising 85" high and 74" wide, was featured in Bianchini's 40-year retrospective at the East Hawaii Culture Center in 2010.
The sculpture was installed free-of-charge by the artist in the Library's atrium July 5. The Friends of the Hilo Public Library provided funding for the bronze plaque which is located next to the lanai on a stand near the Young Adult Section.
"The name of the piece means life is not controllable, rather it is a process," said Bianchini. "Our dreams and our decisions have a life of their own. Art and the creative process are like that."
"For many years, I had dreamed of how I could show my gratitude for this nurturing sanctuary, the Hilo Public Library," Bianchini said. "I am honored to be able to donate this sculpture to Hilo through this library."
Bianchini's connection to the Library began in 1974
Laupahoehoe Library Re-roofing Project Schedule Revised
The completion of Laupahoehoe Public & School Library's re-roofing and downspout replacement project has been extended due to unforeseen conditions encountered beneath the existing roof surface and rainy weather conditions.
The Library's previously scheduled reopening date has been revised to allow the necessary work to be completed. Laupahoehoe Public & School Library (Big Island) is tentatively scheduled to reopen in late fall 2013. The book drop will continue to be locked and inaccessible for the duration of the extended project.
"We apologize to our Library patrons who may be inconvenienced by the temporary delay of this re-roofing and downspout replacement project," said State Librarian Richard Burns. "However, the health and safety of our patrons and staff are very important to us and must be addressed before we allow the Library to reopen."
