Grants for Librarians

Grant Requests

The primary objective of the Friends of the Library of Hawai‘i is to maintain free public libraries in the State of Hawai`i, to promote extension of library services throughout the State of Hawai‘i and to increase the facilities of the public library system of Hawai‘i by securing materials beyond the command of the ordinary library budget. If you are interested in requesting funds for your library branch you may fill out our online request form. You must also circulate your confirmation email for approvals by library administration.

Continuing Education (temporarily unavailable)

Recognizing the importance of renewing skills and interests in librarianship, the Friends award grants each year for library staff to attend the American Library Association and Public Association Conferences. This allows for a flow of information to come from a national network of librarians into our island state. Funds are also available for librarians wishing to enhance their skills at workshops and seminars both on the mainland and within Hawai‘i.

Anniversary Grants

Currently, FLH provides funding for each 10-year or 25-year anniversary celebration. If your branch would like to request this funding, your branch manager must email the request to FLH. Please follow the link: Anniversary Grants Request

Discretionary Funds & Grant Reports

FLH provides Discretionary Funds to each branch, section, and bookmobile annually. The purpose of these funds is to assist with small purchases for programs, projects, and additions to collections. In order to release new funding, branch managers must submit an expense report with receipts to FLH for the previous year. The report may be completed electronically or may be hand-written. Please click here to find the Grant Guidelines. Click the link below to download the report form:

Other funds are donated annually to each branch by individual donors through FLH. The Schindler Grant is also a form of discretionary funding and a report must be submitted in order to release new funds (contingent upon the donation).
