An Insiders Look at the Friends Booksale by Wanda Adams

Each hot and muggy June, Friends of the Library of Hawaii becomes a loose-knit but fervent ‘ohana with hundreds of volunteers focused on one goal: to sell donated books, recorded works and even artworks to raise money for the state’s 50 libraries.

Over the course of two weeks (set-up time followed by the hectic sale and then the breakdown), the volunteers talk story, discover common bonds, share books (we are our best customers) and revive relationships that, for many, are but a once-a-year-occurrence. Books that are not sold are donated to needy library systems elsewere, or held for later sale online if they have collectible value.

At the core of this impressive operation are year-round volunteers, who put in regular weekly shifts, pricing, sorting and packing books. Each is responsible for a particular subject area and each has a phenomenal memory of our stock and a loving, protective attitude toward their “babies.”

Opening Your Door To the World-Wide Voyage!

We are pleased to announce Friends of the Library of Hawai‘i (FLH) is partnering with the Polynesian Voyaging Society, as an official host to help bring community awareness to the Mālama Honua Worldwide Voyage of the Hōkūle’a and Hikianalia to a library near you. The goal of the voyage is to grow a global movement toward a more sustainable world. The voyage will cover 47,000 nautical miles, 85 ports, and 26 nations (including 12 of UNESCO’s Marine World Heritage sites) through June 2017.

Join us May 20th, from 3:00-7:00 PM at the Waimānalo Public & School Library for the inaugural event. From 3:00-5:00 PM there will be Activity and Education stations to include: the star compass, knot tying, map of the Worldwide Voyage, and peace flags. Stay for the Director’s Screening of the documentary film Papa Mau: The Wayfinder from 5:30-7:00 PM with Q&A with Director Nā‘ālehu Anthony.

Working with selected Public and School Libraries, PVS will provide free educational outreach programs geared to communities throughout the state. Each presentation will include a number of activity and education stations, workshops and movies. In addition, crewmembers and specialists will inspire as they share their expertise and their unique voyaging experiences.

A traveling exhibit of photos and other voyaging materials in addition to books related to subjects presented will be available at the libraries prior to and following the outreach day.  The schedule is not yet confirmed. Please check back soon for more information.
