Kaneohe Public Library, located at 45-829 Kamehameha Highway, will celebrate its 50th Anniversary with special performances and events on Sunday, January 27 from 10:15 a.m. – 3 p.m. The public is invited to attend this free event and the Library will be open during its normal Sunday public service hours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Featured performers will include Grammy and Na Hoku Hanohano Award award-winning slack key guitarist Jeff Peterson; renowned Native Hawaiian storyteller Lopaka Kapanui, award-winning magician and balloon artist Kelvin Chun, and Douglas Pooloa Tolentino and band Paahana.
The schedule of events and performances includes:
* 10:15 a.m. – Opening Ceremony: special presentations by local dignitaries
* 10:30 a.m. – Storyteller Lopaka Kapanui, "Spooky Hawaiian Stories to Chill Your Spine"
* 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. – Petting Zoo in Program Room (Garage): Llama, mini-cow, pig, and other animals
* Noon – Paahana Hawaiian Music Trio featuring Douglas Pooloa Tolentino (ukulele), Pakala Fernandes (upright bass), and Kipo Kukahiko (guitar)
* 1 p.m. – Jeff Peterson, Grammy and Na Hoku Hanohano Award award-winning slack key guitarist
* 3 p.m. – Kelvin Chun Magic Show
* 4 p.m. – Kelvin Chun: "Magi-Kel" Balloon Artistry
The Friends of Kaneohe Library, the Friends of the Library of Hawaii, and McDonald's of Kaneohe are sponsoring Kaneohe Public Library's 50th Anniversary Celebration. Refreshments will be served.
The Library, which opened in January 1963, was built to serve a community that is both urban and rural and it also serves as a back-up reference and resource facility for HSPLS' Windward public libraries in Kahuku, Kailua, and Waimanalo.
