Learn How to Eat Sensibly and Stay Healthy in the New Year

Do you want to learn how to eat sensibly and stay healthy throughout the holidays and in the New Year?  Rita Madden, a registered dietician, will conduct free presentations at selected Oahu public libraries from Saturday, January 12 through Saturday, January 26, 2013.

Madden will discuss health and nutrition topics and suggest traditional ways of eating for weight loss and chronic disease prevention. Friends of the Library of Hawaii Chapter Affiliates or Local Friends of the hosting libraries are sponsoring the following presentations:

* "Versatile Vermicelli: Quick and Cost-Effective Ways to Prepare Healthy Meals" – Madden will conduct a cooking demonstration to present a quick, cost-effective, delicious, and nutritious way to prepare a meal using vermicelli.  Learn how to make a dish that can be altered in a variety of ways to incorporate various food groups.  This program is suitable for ages 12 and older.  Recipes and a resource guide will be provided: January 12, 2013, 10:30 a.m. at Kapolei Public Library (phone: 693-7050).

*  "Healthy Food is Tasty Food" – Adults can learn how to prepare foods for eating such as chocolate, saimin, eggs, butter, pork, rice, and desserts in a delicious and nutritious manner.  Madden will discuss techniques for shopping and cooking foods for weight loss and chronic disease prevention.  Food samples for tasting, recipes, and a resource guide will be provided: January 19, 2013, 10:30 a.m. at Hawaii Kai Public Library (phone: 397-5833).

* "Preparing Quick and Healthy Meals" – Adults and seniors can learn how to prepare a quick, delicious and nutritious meal.  Madden will conduct a cooking demonstration and discuss cooking and shopping strategies that will decrease time in the kitchen.  Food samples for tasting, recipes, and a resource guide will be provided: January 26, 2013, 10:30 a.m. at Aina Haina Public Library (phone: 377-2456).

Contact the hosting library two weeks in advance if a sign language interpreter or other special accommodation is needed, and for more information.  Other libraries are scheduled to host similar presentations by Rita Madden in 2013; these programs are scheduled to be announced in January 2013.  Please visit the HSPLS website: www.librarieshawaii.org for a complete listing of these programs in the coming weeks.
