The Friends of Waimea Public Library provide support to the Waimea Public Library through funds received from donations, grants, book sales and craft sales. These funds cover the cost of honoraria, materials, and refreshments for library events, programs, and community outreach. In recent years the Friends of Waimea Public Library have sponsored and volunteered time at Family Literacy Fun Nights, Keiki Storytime, after-school Playmakers activities, the West Side Writers’ Group, ‘Love Your Library’ poster contests, Christmas Craft Fair at the Waimea Lighted Parade, informational booth at the annual Waimea Town Celebration, and other programs for all age groups across a range of interests.
The heart of the FoWPL fundraising is the oshibana (pressed flower) cards and bookmarks made by Friends volunteers. The ‘Oshibana Ladies’ pick, press, dry, and arrange flowers and plants parts to create unique works of art.
