FLH Scholarship Application

Friends of the Library of Hawai‘i is offering scholarships to students pursuing a Master's degree in Library and Information Science at the University of Hawai‘i. Applications are accepted annually by May 24. Scholarships are awarded each year by the end of August. To apply, please complete this online application. Policy Statement

I hereby declare that I have read and understand the policy statement specifications and conditions.(Required)
PURPOSE
To provide financial assistance to students who are currently enrolled in the Graduate School of Library and Information Studies, University of Hawai‘i, or who have been accepted for enrollment for the following semester. Those enrolled through the HITS program must so state.

SCHOLARSHIP CONDITIONS & PROCEDURES
The Scholarship Committee will interview applicants in the June-July period. Applicants will be contacted by email or by phone. Please be sure to include a contact number for phone interviews which need to be arranged in advance. The committee prefers personal interviews. If the committee is unable to interview you, your application may be considered incomplete, resulting in disqualification.

- Awards will be made on the basis of scholarship, character, and need.
- Scholarship awardees will be notified by early August.

In the event you are awarded a scholarship:

1. Checks for scholarships will be forwarded to winners upon receipt of a suitable digital photo. Passport type “head shot” that is high resolution.

2. The Committee expects the recipients of the scholarships to keep in touch with the Committee by reporting on progress at school and contemplated placement after graduation. The Committee would appreciate the recipient’s attendance at the Friends Annual Meeting held in February.

3. If the recipient does not graduate from library school within three years after receipt of the scholarship, the entire amount reverts to a loan and must be repaid within two years after last attendance at school.

4. The Committee requests that scholarship recipients volunteer with FLH for a minimum of 20 hours at a book sale or in the FLH warehouse.

The Friends of the Library of Hawai‘i is a nonprofit organization whose primary objective is to maintain free public libraries in the State of Hawai‘i, to promote extension of library services throughout the State of Hawai‘i and to increase the facilities of the public library system of Hawai‘i by securing materials beyond the command of the ordinary library budget. Other objectives are to focus attention on libraries and to encourage and accept, by bequest or gift, donations of books, manuscripts, money, and other appropriate material that can enrich the cultural opportunities available to the people of Hawai‘i.
