Description
In celebration of the 2012 HSPLS Summer Reading Programs, the Hawaii State Library will offer free events in June and July:
* June 28, 5:30 p.m., First Floor Reading Room - "Book Making: Collette's Sketch Book." Lilla LeVine will demonstrate how to create a beautiful French art journal - full of grace, charm and surprises. Participants will take home "how to" instructions and ideas for their book. Free pamphlets will be offered to the first 20 people who sign up; call 586-3614 to register. The Friends of the Library of Hawaii is sponsoring this Adult Summer Reading Program event for ages 18 and older.
* June 30, noon, Main Lobby - "Mezzo-Soprano Laurie Rubin: Recital of Opera and Show Tunes." Rubin, who was trained at Oberlin Conservatory and Yale, has performed in Carnegie Hall, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the White House, and at venues throughout the United States as well as England and Italy. Rubin, who has been blind since birth, has performed operatic roles and concerts of new music with the Chamber Music Society of the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts as well as with others. Rubin will be accompanied by pianist Jenny Taira, and perform songs such as "Habanera" from the opera "Carmen" by Georges Bizet, "Somewhere" from "West Side Story" by Leonard Bernstein, and "You'll Never Walk Alone" from "Carousel" by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein. In addition, Austin Yoshida, who plays the lead role of "Oliver!" at the Ohana Arts Performing Arts Festival and School this summer, will sing "Where Is Love."
* July 7, 10:30 a.m., Edna Allyn Room for Children - "Mad Science Presents Fire and Ice." Children ages 4 to 12 are invited to attend the Library's Summer Reading Grand Finale where Mad Science's scientists will present exothermic chemical reactions and the wonders of dry ice with flash paper, an "explosive" bottle blast, a crazy bubble shower and creepy, foggy effects. All children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver. The Friends of the Library of Hawaii is sponsoring this program.
The program schedule is subject to change. Contact the Library as soon as possible if a sign language interpreter or other special accommodation is needed for these events.
Performances by Jeff Gere and other featured artists from the Statewide Cultural Extension Program (SCEP) are co-sponsored by the University of Hawaii's Outreach College, Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
